Student Medical Plan

Coverage that fits your needs on and off campus.

This plan, provided by Anthem Student Advantage (ASA), is designed specifically for Caltech students and covers all types of medical and mental healthcare – routine, urgent, and emergency – while you are on campus, at home, and even while traveling abroad.

What to Know

  • You can receive care from the best local doctors near campus, as well as a large national network of top-quality doctors.
  • You may receive care from any doctor or hospital, but the plan pays more – and you pay less – when you use Anthem Student Advantage (ASA) PPO Providers.
  • When you go to an ASA doctor for a routine office visit, you pay a copay. Any extra care, such as lab work or X-rays, is subject to the plan’s deductible and coinsurance.
  • When you use ASA pharmacies, you will be charged the lesser of the drug cost or set flat copays.
    • Access the Prescription Drug List via the ASA website to ensure you are referencing the most current version or contact the Anthem Concierge.
  • Your plan features an annual deductible (per person). After you reach the deductible, you will be responsible for a percentage of the cost (called coinsurance).
  • Once your costs reach the annual out-of-pocket maximum, the plan plays 100% for eligible services the rest of the policy year.
  • Through LiveHealth Online, you can connect with a U.S. board-certified doctor 24/7, 365 days a year via your phone, tablet, or computer, usually within an hour at no cost to you if you are enrolled in a Caltech student medical plan.
  • Regardless of whether or not you choose to elect Caltech medical coverage, you have access to Student Wellness Services for medical support and counseling services on campus.
  • Medical services include preventive care, primary care, allergy shots, athletic physicals, travel consultations, and sexual and reproductive health services. Medical care provided at the health center is free.
  • Counseling services offer individual therapy, couples therapy, as well as group therapy and workshops. For therapy sessions, you have the choice of meeting in-person or over a HIPPA-compliant Zoom platform. There is no charge to students for services provided by the Center or for office visits with our consulting psychiatrist, when the referral is made by a Counseling Services provider.
  • For additional care needs, you may be referred to an off-campus provider.
  • For emergencies or after-hours urgent care, you’ll also need to seek care off campus.
